Well I was planning to use CHR ROM so it'd take as slow as a few mapper writes at worst. However the name table would have to be rewritten, but 7x4 characters sounds doable in one frame (at worst double duffering will be used).
That would be nice. Even just a video and a corresponding PNG sprite sheet could get things started.
