What's the difference of the Famicom AV(Famicom 2?) versus a Famicom with the AV mod? I wanted to get a top loader nes but I found out that it only has an RF output and if you do an AV mod on it, it will have lines thru the screen. Does the Famicom with the AV mod do the same thing as a modded top loader?
Also where would be a good place to buy a famicom and a converterto play NES games on it?
-Thanks!
Famicom AV or Famicom with AV mod?

The av famicom usually has better video quality. (*depending on how well the mod was done) now you're gonna get some darker video out of japanese systems....but the brightness knob on your tv should fix that. There is some suspicion the audio mixing on av famicoms is not 100% correct (for extra audio carts like castlevania 3j) The nes toploader is known for its notorious "lines" on the screen. Also again depending on how well the mod is done you might get better/worse video quality. Overall the av famicom is the easiest (and probably best) choice.
edit: *depending how well the mod was done on a normal famicom the video might be inferior

No suspicion here, I can confirm that it's quite a bit off with my AV Fami. It's most noticeable in CV3 (and likely other VRC6 games). It almost completely drowns out the 2A03 at times. Gimmick, strangely enough, seems to sound the same on both my Fami and my modded NES...Jeroen wrote:There is some suspicion the audio mixing on av famicoms is not 100% correct (for extra audio carts like castlevania 3j)

When I say av famicom. I mean the officially licensed thing.HappehLemons wrote:When you say av famicom are you always referring to a modified av famicom? I'm confused on when you're talking about the Famicom AV or the Famicom with the AV hardware mod.
-Thanks
^^btw nice to get some confirmation on that exp sound thing.
edit: so let me make this clear:
original nes - pros: prob. close to home
cons: connector issues
famicom original with mod: pros sound is mixed better on "special" carts cons: depending on how well the mod is done you might get good/bad a/v
av famicom: pros: av output out of the box cons: audio on carts is not mixed as well.
toploader nes: pros no adaptor needed or anything
cons: vertical lines on screen with or without a/v mod. (altough they found a way to get rid of most of them with an av mod)
