Well, for a change let's slow down and try to remember the worst music you ever heard in video games. Could be bad either because the song itself is bad or because the place where it's played doesn't fit the song at all (both at once if possible). It doesn't have to be NES songs also.

So my vote are for :
1) Metroid : Norfair http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Hbzbu4ZZ ... E4&index=3
This song is just horrible in my opinion the author should have been posseded when composing it.
2) Final Fantasy XII : The sandsea : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9f57Ysvg7ws
This music is horribly dissonant at the point I think the author just typed random thing into his computer, and you hear this in a desert which doesn't fit it at all.
3) Breath of Fire II : Fly pudding http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Mlb4CSH7KHA
This music is very annoying, sound very low quality for the SNES standards, and you have to bear it close to an hour non-stop at one point in the game.

Back to the future.

Hahaha, it's funny you mention the Norfair music on Metroid, because that is in my opinion THE WORST video game music ever. Even Cheetahmen II had better music. I couldn't believe someone actually released that. Those notes in the beginning make me laugh out loud because they're so rotten!

Otherwise I think Castlevania Harmony of Dissonance has terrible music too. It is like playing a GBA game graphically and a GB game musically (there's like no sound sampling).

I'd have to say that the worst track conversions I've listened to would have to be the Gameboy Battle of Olympus tracks. Those have an especially bad sound to me, knowing what the originals were like.

As for flat out bad music tracks in games, I don't really recall anything so bad that it was noteworthy.

I'm still wondering what that crap is supposed to be in 1942 (NES port). Fake morse code in the form of a monotone song?

- How could be Metroid the worst music ever? Are you crazy? I really love the Metroid soundtrack, even the GBA (Zero Fusion) is great. Perhaps Gears_of_War has better music? Guitar Hero? -_-;;

Sonic Adventure 2, Sonic Heroes, and Eurotrash racing games.

Oh, and don't forget some of the terrible noise generated by the most annoying pirate games.

Oh, the rest of the Metroid soundtrack is pretty good in my opinion. I LOVE the theme for Kraid's Lair. That's some of my favorite game music ever. The Norfair theme, on the other hand, is the worst game music ever, to me at least.

Oh please post individual tracks, not whole soundtracks. If you have a whole soundtrack you hate, please try post the worst track of it.

Well, I admit it's you who already told me that, and I just 100% agree. Altough other Metroid music isn't much better in my honnest opinion, most songs soud like failed attempts at pulling ambient music off the NES. The only one I enjoy is stage 1 song (that's Brinstar I guess), pretty much all others could have made it to the worst music ever list in my opinion, but I'd just put the very worst and leave the others (the same applies to FF12).

@Fx3 : Have you listened the clip I posted ? Do you REALLY like that music ? If you do, fine, everyone gets different tastes, it's just funny I can't imagine anyone enjoy hearing this. I might lack imagination tough. Again, many people can't imagine someone that actually enjoy listening 8-bit tunes, and I do. Again I guess many people like Metroid because it's the first game they played on the NES, and they love it even if I don't see what in it beat heroes of the lance.

@ccovell : Yes, Bases Loaded II music effectively sounds terribly annoying and repetitive.

The themes in this game are actually really cool remixes from the original games. They scream to be properly redone on the NES.

Even if not properly executed, Mega Man music is always cool!
