Actually, I just compared BMP and PNG and you're right, I can't even really see any noticeable difference. Very nice.

In any case, I like your reasons. From now on I will post PNGs.

Hmmm...in fact, I think it would be trivial for me to change all of the previous image references to PNG as well. I will look into this...

Pz! :)

PNG is a lossless format, so it would be strange if you saw any difference at all. It also supports up to 16bits/channel so it's superior to both BMP and GIF (but it doesn't support animations as GIF does)

Yes it does. Not all browsers support it though. Firefox has supported it for ages.

For one thing, APNG appears to be Firefox-exclusive; it doesn't show up in Safari or Chrome. It certainly isn't documented on libpng.org.

And how would I save an animated screenshot in APNG format? What well-known free paint programs support writing APNG with more than one frame? GIMP 2.6.6 for Windows sure doesn't: saving as test.apng gave "The given filename does not have any known file extension. Please enter a known file extension or select a file format from the file format list.", and saving a 2-frame animation as test.png gave "PNG plug-in can't handle layers [Merge Layers] [Cancel]", unlike test.gif that gives a third button "[Save as Animation]".

I didn't say it was great, just that it supported animations. These things don't catch on unless they are widely supported. Enough off-topic, isn't it? =)
