Favorite SNES sound track?

Whats your favorite SNES sound track?

Personally I like Earthbound's soundtrack, it fits nicely with the games Avant-garde atmosphere </pretentiousness>

Super Mario RPG's soundtrack is easily my favorite. Most of the tracks are enjoyable, and there is a good variety of styles. Highlights include 1-1, 1-9, 1-15, 1-28, 1-35, 2-04, 2-12, and 2-19.

Final Fantasy VI. "Searching for friends" is probably the best song in the game, right up there with Dancing Mad, and the ending medley.

I'd also highly rank Rock 'n Roll Racing, it sounds just like rock music without vocals.

FF4/6, R&R Racing, Actraiser, and Super Metroid are probably my top 5. Secret of Mana, Zelda, and some of the Soul Blazer tracks filter in and out of there depending on mood.

I'd say my top list in this order : Live a Live, Chrono Trigger, Secret of Mana, Tales of Phantasia, Star Ocean, Super Castlevania IV, Final Fantasy series. (pretty much ALL tracks in the mentioned games are great so I can't just give names).

I don't have a "favorite", but one that I have been really into lately is Umihara Kawase.

Really depends on the genre/type of music, I'll say.

My faves in the music department are probably Chrono Trigger, Secret of Mana and FFVI. I clearly remember the first time I got to listen to 'I won't forget' from SoM -- t'was instant earsex there and then. :)
The soundtrack featured in the American version of Bio Metal is simply kick arse IMHO.

I'm surprised nobody mentioned the Mega Man X series. There are a bunch of tracks from each of those games that are mind blowing. Such as this and this. I also enjoy Chrono Trigger, Secret of Mana, Zelda: Link to the Past, oh and Secret of Evermore, I think, has an underrated soundtrack as well. *edit* Did anyone mention Super Metroid? (edit, yes) Man, the atmosphere in that soundtrack drew me in like nothing else. Sometimes I felt like I was *inside* that game when I played it, like a really engaging novel.

I agree MMX has a pretty good soundtrack but most of the songs sound a lot alike.

Actraiser, especially the end credits. Super Castlevania IV. I could probably think of a few others but it's been a while

I have to disagree with the comments made about Mega Man X music. I'm not saying it is terrible or anything, I find it kind of bland personally. Mega Man 1-3 had awesome music, it went terribly wrong in 4, and was fixed from 5 and on but never recovered completely IMO.

I'm surprised Battletoads & Double Dragon hasn't been mentionned yet. The SNES game sucks gameplay wise, but has really great rocky remixes of the NES songs (and some originals too - while some songs in the NES version were dropped). What is nice is that they are completely remixed, not just "ported". The level 1 music is one of my favorite songs ever, both the NES and SNES version, I don't know which one I like the best as both are very different but very great.

Castlevania - Dracula X also have great music, altough not as good as Super Castlevania IV, the sound quality is drastically better tough.

Also I am surprised Seiken Densetsu 3 hasn't been mentionned it has really good music.

Tales of Phantasia is my fave RPG soundtrack. The regular battle theme is desperate and uplifting while most rpg battles just kind of boogie (Chrono Trigger).

Magical Pop'N has peppy, addictive music.

Kirby Superstar

Super Mario World and Yoshi's Island. Not All Stars, tho'.

Zombies Ate My Neighbors probably one of the most underappreciated SNES games for audio

Lost Vikings

Breath of Fire II is a mixed bag but the dungeon music makes me nervous so it's worth a mention.

Contra 3

Illusion of Gaia

Without a doubt: Star Fox (Pity that was the composer's last game soundtrack...)

Of course, that isn't to say there wasn't a lot of competition for the top spot. Square, Konami, Capcom, Nintendo, Rare, Falcom, et al all made dozens of fantastic soundtracks for the system (that I won't bother listing), so I'm actually a bit surprised at how easily I came to this conclusion. I'm not musically-inclined enough to describe it, but there's something in the soundtrack that encapsulates everything I love about 16-bit music.

Side-note: Biometal wins the surreality award.
