IGN Top-25 Consoles and Top-100 NES Games

Post by jwdonal »

I thought these were some interesting articles/videos. Thought I would share.

The console link has videos you can watch instead of just reading. The games link is text only but does have some general gameplay videos.

Once again, the Sega Genesis and the first Metroid are way too much overrated as opposed to my opinion, but other than that no major surprises. They could really rate BT higher I think but oh well.

Some FC only "hidden" gems are badly missing, but that's not much a surprise.

EDIT : looks like they used a sucky emulator for their screenshots.... not the frist time I see it... I even see this in magazines.

EDIT II : Fail for including Fester's Quest.

EDIT III : Why so many of my favourites NES games are in the 80s too ?? Oh well...

Really? Sounds like a WIN to me. Although there are games that I consider worse than it in the list.

The GameFAQs NES board made a collaborative top 100 list over the course of the past decade. Personally, I think think it's generally better than IGN's list (and most other lists), but being an amalgamation of a ton of top 10 lists it is missing out on some good games that wouldn't appear on many top 10 lists (ie Shatterhand, Qix, Power Blade):

I'd be interested in seeing what NesDev's favorites are.

These lists are always biased towards big-name games released in the US. There are many less known games (not necessarily Famicom-only) that should be given a chance.

At some point the editors at IGN were probably just writing down games they could remember. Uh... Micky Mousecapade? That's the crap you ended up with if you didn't write a christmas list.

In that case, I guess IGNorance is bliss.

If Zelda is 2, Crystalis deserves a #1!!! It killed it in sound, game play was at par or above, and graphics were way more killer!

But nooo....it got 478 to Zelda's 3336. Something is wrong there, and I think it's they haven't actually played every NES game. We need one made by REAL collectors.

These lists always suck.

The list should be renamed as "Top 100 NES games, that are either popular or have sold well"

Exactly! I don't see the point in these lists, since the same games pop up over and over. Everyone already knows all these games, so the lists bring nothing new to the table. What I'd like to see is a list of underrated obscure games, possibly not even released in the US, so that we can look into something that's actually "new".

But of course, that wouldn't please the advertisers, who are trying to sell copies of their older games on Wii Shop.

If the lists are just a form of cheap advertising, then that's one more reason to ignore them.
