Reading the Power Pad

Hi guys,

I was wondering if anyone would be able to point me in the right direction as far as how to read all of the buttons on the power pad as an input.

How would reading the power pad differ from reading a normal controller?

Would I strobe it once, do 1 read, strobe it again and do another?

Couldn't find any documentation on the subject.

There is an (old) doc about it on the main page.
http://nesdev.com/powerpad.txt

You get 2 bits per read on D3/D4, I think you strobe it once then read 8 times. There's a code example in that doc too, but just ask if you have any problems. I don't think many people have used it.

May I ask, what kind of game are you planning for the PowerPad/FFF Mat? I'm sensing 8-bit DDR-ness, or is that already out there...?...I can't remember.

Too bad there was never a SMB game that used the mst for movement and the controller for attack/firepower/jump+override.

That might actually be kind of fun. Thinking about it, I could make a handheld PowerPad using the blue Atari 'Kid's Controller' and wire it up in place of the mat to play PP games in my hands. That's be rather funny.
