Here's a rom (with source) to test out a SNES controller on the NES. It's been tested on the powerpak.

A, X, L, and R correspond to Four Score player 3's A, B, Select, and Start.
Does anyone sell the cable for this, or does each user have to solder one? I want to make a mouse demo, and I'm pretty sure it'd use the same cable.

I've checked locally, but could not find anything. I ended up just making one. I'm going to contact the Nestopia/Fceux dev team to see if they'd mind adding support for the SNES controller. I'm currently working on a Zelda-esque adventure game that will require one.

Four Score support should suffice in emulators. I'm more concerned about whether hardware built from
instructions like these is available for sale.

I've never seen them for sale commercially: Not enough demand I guess, so like myself, you'd need to build it.
That's very interesting about the extra buttons though: Pretty rad, being able to actually utilize them in custom games.

Technically, this is NES development, don't you think? He's just using a piece of hardware originally made for the SNES, but this is still a NES project IMO.

Somehow I missed that part of it -- you're absolutely right. Moved thread to NESdev forum. :)

To be honest, at first I also failed to understand what this was. Only after the thread got moved I noticed what it really said.

The Retro Duo uses Super NES controllers for its NES side. I wonder if it will read all buttons on its NES side. I'd test it with the test rom but unfortunately the powerpak doesn't work on the Retro Duo which is why it mostly gets used for Super NES games.
