Increase Text Printing Speed

Greetings all,

I am looking to increase the text printing speed for a game. In more simpler terms, how exactly are text speed options (slow normal fast) done? Are the three speeds three separate unique routines or is the speed controlled with a register?

There's probably a variable for number of frames per character.
