SNS-101 50/60Hz mod questions/problems

Post by game-tech.us »

First what should I expect form the mod, is it going to make an NTSC console output PAL video? If so then that's not what I need.
I need to make the mini play PAL carts and the lockout chip mod didn't work for the only PAL game I have, tetris/dr mario.
The mod shown 'here' kinda worked but not correctly. It will boot the game in 50hz mode but with b&w and scrolling video, but I can switch to 60hz and get a perfect image, but as soon as it wants to load the next sequence I get the 'this cart is not made for your console' screen, which is also what I get if I try to boot in 60hz. If I leave it in 50hz it will boot all the way to main menu and loop other screens etc and I can switch to 60hz at any time and get perfect video and then back to 50hz before it switches screens and it will continue on like nothing is wrong.
Seeing as how PAL tvs display NTSC just fine i'm starting to think this mod is usefull for PAL consoles and tvs only...

No one has any ideas?
It seems the creator of the mod is on vacation for a while.

You cannot get NTSC video with 50Hz from that machine. you get only 60Hz NTSC or 50Hz PAL.
B/W is normal if your TV does not support PAL, and rolling image is because it cannot lock to 50Hz. Not good for the USA folks.
The mod worked perfectly on my TV, which supports both PAL and NTSC, aswell as SECAM and refresh rates from 45 to 72Hz (a nice Euro Philips TV)

Every day I consider importing a nice 1990s to mid-2000s SCART-compatible european TV; would the SCART likely cooperate at 60hz?

I have yet to see an euro TV that has problems with 60Hz. Not all will do NTSC though. On RGB the color setup won't matter though.

I got a spare 28" Philips, but shipping it would be a horribly expensive nightmare...

As I feared, thanks for the confirmation.
Anyone know if there is a way to get the sns-101 ntsc console to play PAL games?

One idea is to give RGB encoder your own color subcarrier, so there would be NTSC50 but that won't help if the TV won't cooperate when it comes to refresh rate.

Not a bad idea, maybe just feed the original signal to it all the time?
Is there schema on this console anywhere?
