DD-WRT

Post by Dwedit »

Ever heard of this amazing firmware for wireless routers that adds all kinds of cool features?

Here's a big tip for anyone who wants to try this out:
* Stay the hell away from DD-WRT.

My WRT45GL spontaneously died after running it for a month or two, and is now an unflashable brick.

Try Tomato instead.

I've been using DD-WRT for over 3 years on 2 different model of router and never had an issue. It's possible that the problem might been unrelated to the firmware or you were really unlucky. I don't really see how a firmware could have been working for a month and then kill your router... This custom firmware made my life way easier I must say. Have you tried to reflash it using JTAG maybe?

That doesn't sound conclusive. I use DD-WRT and have for about a looong time without issue.

There is a trick to recover it using TFTP if you haven't tried that.

No link, no ping, no "network cable connected" indication, no TFTP, nothing after hitting or holding reset with power on or off, just a brick that blinks the power led rapidly.

Back in the day I had a bad flash problem on my WRT54G. The "earthing" method actually worked for me. I've had DD-WRT working for me years afterward; and I've constantly updated brainslayer's builds.

I've been running it for over 5 years without any problems. I've got nothing but good things to say about it. I suppose there is always risk when updating firmware.

I've been running it on my WRTs for several years now, no problems so far. I do want to try Tomato though...

with a dead router, another thing to do is to check the power supply adapter voltage with a meter.
sometimes it's as simple as that, because these have a finite ability to absorb spikes, because of obvious cost-cutting and small size.

The thing was plugged into a UPS, I don't think spikes were a problem.

Been running DD-WRT since it came out.

Been wondering if its dead, since I haven't seen any updates for a while now.
