The NES-sequels that never came..

Post by oRBIT2002 »

If you could do magic, which NES-sequel that never made it, would you bring to life?

I would love to see "Ice Climber 2". I think there's room for alot more features in an Ice Climber game. I am quite surprised that there never were
another Ice Climber game btw..
"The Goonies III" would also be cool. I loved "The Goonies II", so another Goonies-game with a remix of Cyndi Laupers hitmusic would be awesome! :)

The Famicom Disk System version of Ice Climber is actually a port of Vs. Ice Climber. It is quite superior.

Not a sequel, but: I'd like to see Capcom actually come through with their promised port of Black Tiger / Black Dragon for the NES. I have old game magazines and flyers included with Capcom NES games which mention such a port was being done. I'm still irked after 20+ years that it was vapourware. =/

I'm probably in the minority, but a sequel to Castlevania 2. I know there is SOTN and the other Metroidvanias, but I want something where you venture around Transylvania, preferably as a Belmont with a whip...and with horrible jumping mechanics. :D
. That's just like, your opinion, man .

I'm not a proponent of sequels. If there was something good about a game it probably had mostly to do with the people making it and the environment/situation they were in to make it. Sometimes sequels do live up to, or improve upon the originals (e.g. Dark Souls, Mega Man 10, GTA2) but it seems like just as often they don't (Rastan 2, Ninja Gaiden Sigma 2, Sonic 4).

You can't really copyright an element of gameplay, for the most part. It's easy to borrow gameplay ideas you thought you were good when designing a game. The hard part is implementing it well, and tuning/refining it into something that's fun to play.

What I really think it comes down to is whether you get a good team and the right spark to make a good game. They'll probably put out something good whether or not it's a sequel. Maybe if a particular story involving particular characters is a huge part of a game (e.g. Metal Gear Solid) it really helps to keep the same characters/setting from game to game, but when the focus is on gameplay (and in the NES era, it usually is) a lot of the time you could could cosmetically replace characters and setting without fundamentally changing the game (see: Super Mario Bros. 2).

If I had a list of NES games I wanted a sequel to, it would really just be a list of NES games I liked, but what I'm saying is, somebody who could make a good sequel to any of them would probably turn out a game that was just as good even if they didn't have a license to do that sequel.

Edit: Black Tiger could have worked pretty well on the NES, koitsu. I enjoyed that one in the arcade as a kid.

I actually mentioned it because of the recent fuss on the russian romhacking scene about an attempt to get some money off making a hack that adds the long desired (by local community) extra level with Negaduck and plans for even larger hack and make as well long desired second game using engine of the first game.

Wikipedia says Black Tiger is Z80; to make it NES you have to convert these things. However, it says a version for the Commodore 64 was released; if decimal mode is not used you could possibly use a similar 6502 machine codes adjusted for NES/Famicom. Ask Capcom about it if you are interested.

I'm sorry, my english fails me here. You meanthat thay are gathering money to make a hack OR they already finished a hack and try to sell it in some way or something like that?

Wahaha, after watching Dendy Memories #2: Darkwing Duck I myself started to make a hack of this game. I got Quacker jack stage and some Boss logic done, but realised that I can't finish it solely because I have a bad art skills. Especially for a huge boss battle.

Good one :)

Hmmm...When I think back to these days of pegasus I can remember that I always hoped to find a sequel of TaleSpin and Tiny Toons.
Yea, I know about Tiny Toon sequel, but I wanted a REAL one. The sequel we got from Konami is nothing what we deserved, IMO.

They made a hack and asked to donate certain amount of money to get it released the ROM file, plus a quite expensive (for local scene) cart release. That was done with attitude 'give the money or get nothing', so it created some fuss and dispute. Anyway, they collected some money, half of that they wanted, and it get released now.
