Is this possible since Compact Flash and IDE are similar?

Yes, but highly irrational.

No. All CompactFlash cards are required to support an 8-bit wide data bus, but PATA doesn't.

Does the PowerPak require this? I was under the impression the FPGA/Microcontroller/Whatever that emulates the mapper is also responsible for CF card I/O, and likely has its own access to a bus wider than 8 bits.

The NES does everything.

AFAIK, the 6502 does all the I/O.

However with the NES and enough programmable logic you can do next to anything. You could create your own powerpak mapper to support >8bit I/O.

But still there isnt' much point. If one were to invest the time to do something of this nature you'd be better off to design hardware that supported something more user freindly than IDE through a CF slot... Still highly irrational.
