N163: Sangokushi 2 - Haou no Tairiku seems to be the one with wavetable sound, not Sangokushi (1) - Chuugen no Hasha. also has wavetable sound.

Anyway, I took the entire NSF archive from nsf.joshw.info, and used a little bit of perl to only return ones where the "expansion audio" byte was a (non-infinite) power of 2. This found 152, of which 126 were FDS. There are false positives here, certainly—e.g. Family Circuit '91 does not have expansion audio.

Here's the processed list:

I think the Japanese version of Top Gun uses expansion audio too. Don't know about chips and mapper though (could look it up). In fact the Japanese version used licensed themes from the movie and I think the US version had the tunes changed because of copyright reasons(?).

In the past, a friend of mine had a Famicom modded to output Stereo sound. Now I think of it, the mod probably just outputs the onboard audio in one channel and the expansion audio in another, instead of mixing them into one single mono signal. But the mod didn't always work correctly, and some games had missing voices, and Top Gun was one of them, maybe the mod was not able to output all expansion audio for some reasons.

lidnariq:
1. The NSF for Sangokushi - Chuugen no Hasha absolutely has N163 audio.
2. The Sangokushi NSF does not play in NSFPlay, VirtuaNSF, FooGEP, FCEUX, VirtuaNES, or Nestopia, so I can't verify.
3. I checked everything on your list that wasn't already on mine. All of them were false positives.

Let me know if you find anything not on my list that have expansion audio on them.

Gilbert:
You're going to have to give me more information. Top Gun JP's bootgod entry clearly has no expansion audio circuitry. If it exists in some other form you'll have to point me at it.

Oops. The triangle waves fooled me.

WFM with nsfplay22 and audio overload. I agree it's not working in FCEUX or Nestopia.

Ah, I use a beta version of NSFPlay, which now has the illegal opcodes implemented instead of them being a NOP. Well, that's enough to verify that it has N163, though I guess that NSF should be flagged to be fixed.

Yeah, you are correct, maybe my memory betrayed me.
I just tested, the US version had to same title music, but has its in-game track muted. This is not because of expansion audio though.

The in-game track, which can still be heard during attract mode and during refueling, appears to be a sound-alike for "Danger Zone".

thank you rainwarrior. i have been wondering why bases loaded/ Moero!! Pro Yakyuu seemed to only play the audio like the crowd cheers and the crack of the bat on the japanese famicom system but using a 60-to-72 pin adapter would not play those sounds on the american NES i thought the pinout for the pcm was somehow different. yet other japan games played that channel with no problems on both systems. guess that lays to rest my question! jaleco used expansion audio who knew!

I never heard of that Bandai chip (the last on the list).
Is it also a speech synthesizer similar to Jaleco's ?
(which means you can't do music with it) ?

I don't know much about it, but I guess it's some kind of simple speech synthesizer that plays data already stored on the chip. The Jaleco ones are just a sample player (also with the data stored on chip).

It decodes PARCOR vocoder data and plays back stored samples on the chip. If it's wired another way it can be used as a PARCOR decoder by streamed input. It also can decode PARCOR melody data. So, yes it can do music.

Do you want to include the N129 and other potential Chinese Famiclone games with audio expansion hardware?

I only want to include games that actually use the audio, so probably N129 is irrelevant. (Similarly, all the MMC5 games that don't use the audio, all the FDS games that don't use the audio, etc.)

If you've got Chinese pirate games that have expansion sound, sure I'll add them to the list.

It occurs to me I should have put this on The Wiki: http://wiki.nesdev.com/w/index.php/List ... sion_audio
